The first time I stepped on a yoga mat was well over 10 years ago now, and I can tell you, at that time, I was one of those "I am not a yoga person" person. My mother took me to a couple classes and I laid down on my mat with my eyes open wondering how in god's name the person next to me was snoring. Back then the only yoga I was exposed to was the picture perfect "this is yoga" yoga. Being under 5' and slightly on the chubby side I didn't feel like I fit the yogi mold. Little did I know that sleeping in child's pose, crossing my legs into lotus pose and crawling around the floor on my knees, popping up into wheel pose, was yoga. I was a yogi without even knowing it!
My real yoga transformation started in my early twenties, I was going through some difficult transitions in my life and had just been introduced to mindfulness, I think that's where the yoga bug started. I loved learning how to listen to my mind, and when I stepped on my mat I learned how to listen to my body, I also started my fitness journey at this time. For me, yoga wasn't about looking a certain way or being able to do a certain pose, it was just about taking the time for myself, being there for my body, loving it and all that it has to offer me; that's a pretty powerful thing to be able to do for yourself.
I try to bring that to every class that I teach, reminding my students that this is their time, I'm only there to offer a wide path that you can walk along, but feel free to stray when you need to stray. I've been lucky to have the opportunity to grow so much through this beautiful practice, and I'm so blessed that I now get to share and learn from so many talented and beautiful yogis.
You don't have to look a certain way and you don't have to be able to do a certain pose to be a yogi. You just have to be YOU. All you need is yourself and a smile and you can do just about anything. You gotta start somewhere so why not start here.
